Harmony Fusion Chorus is proud to be a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances. Sweet Adelines International boasts an international membership of nearly 27,000 women, including more than 1,200 registered quartets and 600 choruses. The organization’s motto is “Harmonize the world.”Harmony Fusion Chorus is exactly what its name implies
– a fusion of harmony and in harmony.
A fusion of harmony, the ensemble was formed by the consolidation of two smaller choruses, both chapters of Sweet Adelines International. Harmony Bay Chorus, chartered in 1973, had a home in Oakland at the Lake Merritt United Methodist Church. Harmony Crossroads, chartered in 1993, was based at the Pleasanton Community Church in Pleasanton. The two groups once had occasion to sing together and, lo and behold, the blend was instantly intoxicating. We knew that together we had a sound that we wanted to hold onto.
A fusion in harmony, the new chorus emerged as one unit, with all of the members supporting each other and giving full voice to the new creation. The internal cultures of the two groups were so compatible, it was almost as though we had always been one.
Prior to finalizing our official consolidation, the members of both choruses sang together at our regional competition under the name of Harmony Crossroads Chorus. Although we had only practiced together about three months, we won a third-place medal in the mid-size chorus division, and a fourth-place medal in Region 12. To us, this was proof positive that we were on the right track.
Harmony Fusion Chorus is committed to musical excellence and education. We enthusiastically come together to share the joy of singing four-part, a Capella harmony in the barbershop style. We take pride in our involvement in the community. We strive for innovative entertainment and diversity in our membership.
Of course, no chorus can be successful without good leadership. Harmony Fusion Chorus is exceptionally lucky to have an outstanding director, Barb Vander Putten. Her relaxed style and generous infusion of humor enhance her ability to get the musical message across and to bring out the best vocal quality in each and every singer. With Barb directing, we ‘feel the love in the room’ and respond with our best.
