2017 Membership Survey
We Asked, You Answered!
The 2017 member survey drew a 33 percent response rate – phenomenal! International President Paula Davis shares the findings and some future initiatives.
Dear Sweet Adelines,
Last spring, over 7,300 of you participated in our member survey, responding to a number of questions on topics ranging from membership recruitment/retention to marketing, music and a myriad of other topics.
Over 33 percent of you engaged in this survey! Your thoughts and desires have revealed the passion and insight that only those who love what they do can bring. We hear you and have been working and planning with your thoughts and desires in mind. Thank you for taking the time to respond; for sharing your experiences and hopes; and for helping inform the international board as we build our strategic plan for the future.
What you’ll see are summarized comments, along with the response percentages and numbers exactly as we received them. Headquarters has a complete list of comments; however, they fill three 3-ring binders, so summarization was very necessary.
In the coming months, you will see and hear more about how your responses helped shape our pathway to the future. While there are challenges ahead, we know that we have the passion, determination and creativity to meet and exceed the needs of the future.
Thank you for working with us as we continue to bring music and harmony to our lives, our communities and our world.
President, Sweet Adelines International
The IBOD Election Process/Slate
By Paula Davis, international president
Each March, IBOD’s executive committee appoints five members to the nominating committee. Three are current IBOD members; two are non-IBOD members.
These five women review applications and references and conduct a phone interview with each applicant. Then the committee meets “electronically” to discuss observations, findings and overall impressions.
Each committee member then emails her choice of applicants to the nominating committee chair and to the corporate services department at headquarters. These individuals serve as “tellers,” who compare tally sheets and prepare an Election Recap Report for the international president. The president calls and informs applicants whether or not they are on the candidate slate.
Each Chapter, Member-at-Large and Chapter-at-Large member will be contacted by email with instructions for voting online. Chapter-at-Large members’ votes are totaled and counted as one chapter’s vote. Member-at-Large votes are handled the same way.
Voting is a member privilege and responsibility, and gives you input into the direction and decisions of the international organization.
We are happy to announce the nominees for two expiring terms on the 2018-2019 board: Thérese Antonini, North Metro Chapter, Region #16; Sharon Cartwright, Northern Beaches Chapter, Region #34; Jeanne d’Arc (JD) Crowe, Canadian Showtime Chapter, Region #16; Janice McKenna, Pacific Sound Chorus, Region #13.
Biographical information provided by each candidate can be found by viewing the Nominee Flyer. Voting will close at 3:00 p.m. CST/8:00 p.m. GMT on Wednesday, December 6, 2017.

Diversity – Journeys to Inclusion
What is “diversity”? What is “inclusion”? Is there a difference between “equality” and “equity”? The Diversity Task Force will be facilitating a workshop where you can explore your own understanding and the understanding of others. We’ll also learn about why our brains make so many assumptions, and why those assumptions are so unreliable.
Workshop outcomes will be focused on:
• Discovering and practicing activities for awareness and personal growth that are suitable for a chorus retreat or a team/committee meeting;
• Creating tools and best-approaches to help individuals and groups succeed in having challenging conversations; AND still want to sing together afterwards!
• Take home barbershopper-ready ways to explore the next steps in your personal journey to greater inclusion practices.
We hope you can join us on Tuesday, October 10th at 10:00 a.m. for this 90-minute workshop in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand. Further details will be released closer to the event.
Click here to RSVP by Sept. 13.
